The timely intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan has saved the
nation’s football from imminent ban as the Chris Giwa faction of the
Nigeria Football Federation has withdrawn the civil suit filed against
the Amaju Pinnick-led group.
The President held a meeting with both factions on Wednesday which
made Giwa agree to withdraw the case at the Federal High Court in Jos on
Thursday.
Giwa had challenged the validity of the elections held on September 30 in Warri which ushered in the Pinnick-led NFF board.
The case filed by Obinna Ogba and Yahaya Adama, both of the Giwa
faction which challenged the NFF elections is now withdrawn and
presiding Justice Ambrose Allagoa subsequently struck out the suit on
Thursday morning.
With the latest development, Nigeria looks set to escape a ban from
Fifa who had given the country till midday on Friday, October 31 to
furnish it with proof that all cases in civil courts against the NFF be
withdrawn.
